SOMCOV is currently implementing a vital project focused on providing life skills, literacy, and numeracy training for out-of-school children and youth in Baidoa’s internally displaced persons (IDP) settlements. The initiative, funded by the Somali diaspora and the Ministry of Education of South West State, responds to a critical education gap faced by displaced communities affected by prolonged conflict and poverty.
This ongoing intervention engages local educators and youth mentors to deliver interactive and culturally appropriate learning in community centers. The goal is to reintroduce basic education in safe, supportive environments while building confidence and foundational skills among youth aged 8 to 17.
So far, over 150 children have enrolled, with more joining each week. Many of these young learners had never attended school before. The program also integrates psychosocial support and community engagement to encourage retention and parental involvement.
By restoring access to learning and helping children catch up on missed opportunities, this project is planting seeds of resilience, self-reliance, and long-term hope. It is a cornerstone in SOMCOV’s commitment to leaving no child behind, no matter their circumstance.
